Jayne Burns, Bob Rohloff and Melba Mebane are part of a fast-growing share of the workforce: Americans working past 75. Many Americans are working into their 70s and 80s — or longer — because of longer life spans, changing attitudes about retirement and insufficient savings. Mebane began working as an "elevator girl" at the Mayer & Schmidt department store in 1949 when she was just 17 years old, through a work-study program at Tyler High School. During her tenure at Dillard's, Mebane had several opportunities to become a manager, but she always turned the offers down. Those friendships, Mebane says, made working at Dillard's "the best job I ever had."

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Two senators from Maine asked the U.S. Army inspector general on Monday to provide a full accounting of interactions with a reservist before he killed 18 people and injured 13 others in the deadliest shooting in the state's history. One of them sent a text message in September saying, “I believe he’s going to snap and do a mass shooting," according to law enforcement. The senators view their federal request as working in tandem with an independent commission that Democratic Gov. Janet Mills is convening to explore the facts related to the shooting, including the police response. The sheriff’s office canceled its statewide alert seeking help locating Card a week before the killings.

Susan Burton and Laura Starecheski andAfter the nurse is sentenced, patients file a lawsuit against the fertility clinic at Yale. The nurse, Donna, is just one person. How did Donna get away with what she was doing — and how long was she doing it for? And what about the pain patients felt during retrievals? We go inside the Yale clinic to find out what staff members can tell us about the failings and to try to make sense of that pain from the perspective of doctors and nurses.

New York CNN —A 68-year-old woman has her job back after she was fired last month for attempting to stop shoplifters at a Lowe’s store in Georgia. “The Lowes (sic) employee, Donna Hansbrough was fired for attempting to stop the theft,” the post said. “After senior management became aware of the incident and spoke to Donna Hansbrough today, we are reinstating her job and we are pleased that she has accepted the offer to return to Lowe’s,” Lowe’s said. A newly approved Alzheimer's drug will be available to patients in the coming days, according to its maker, the Japanese pharmaceutical company Eisai. While Leqembi offers hope to patients and their families, experts say that there are still some key unanswered questions about the drug, including about its safety and effectiveness. Besides questions about who will benefit the most, there are also questions about how long the drug will benefit patients. About 17% of the Leqembi group experienced brain bleeds, compared with 9% in the placebo group. The reports of brain bleeding and brain swelling "may only be the tip of the iceberg," he said.
The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved an Alzheimer’s drug shown in clinical trials to slow cognitive decline in patients in the early stages of the illness. The FDA approved Leqembi for use in people with mild cognitive impairment or early Alzheimer’s disease. Most drugs approved by the FDA for Alzheimer’s are aimed at helping symptoms, not actually slowing the progression of the disease. Friday's announcement comes on the heels of a scathing congressional report released last week detailing the approval of a different Alzheimer’s drug, called Aduhelm. The Alzheimer's Association has said that based on the Eisai and Biogen phase 3 clinical trial results, the FDA should approve Leqembi for early-stage Alzheimer’s.
Trump has long blasted the governor for not helping him overturn Biden's 2020 win in Georgia. Kemp became a national figure after his first gubernatorial contest against Abrams in 2018 and once again after he refused to entertain then-President Donald Trump's entreaties to overturn the 2020 presidential election results. In Morjera's view, the governor has already earned another four years in office, but when it came to the 2024 presidential campaign, he was all in for a third Trump presidential campaign. "President Trump is still my top pick for the next presidential election," Morjera told Insider. After Kemp spoke at the rally, Donna Wexon told Insider that she liked his anti-abortion stance and believed his policies were "good for the economy."
Numbers don’t lie (Madonna is one of the bestselling pop stars of all time), but they don’t often tell the whole story. Without question, I view Madonna as someone who pushed the boundaries of overtly and unabashedly sexual performances in popular culture. But Black artists often get excised from predominating narratives about U.S. popular culture. But Black artists often get excised from predominating narratives about U.S. popular culture. The risks were much higher for the Black women and the Black and Latinx queer people across genders who chose to be sexually provocative entertainers.
LAS VEGAS — Jim Marchant, the election-denying Republican nominee for secretary of state in Nevada, has so far been outspent and out campaigned by his Democratic opponent. Davis, a Republican, said he “hadn’t thought much” about whether the 2020 election was stolen from Trump and remained undecided in the secretary of state race. The dynamics in Arizona’s secretary of state race are similar. He and Marchant, as well as Kristina Karamo, the Republican secretary of state nominee in Michigan, are all members of the pro-Trump America First Secretary of State Coalition, though polling shows Karamo’s race is far less competitive. “This could be the last free and fair election in Nevada,” West said.
As yet another Alzheimer's drug targeting plaque buildup in the brain fails to improve cognition in patients, leading scientists said a significant shift is underway in the search for effective treatments for the disease. By 2050, that number is projected to rise to nearly 13 million, according to an estimate from the Alzheimer’s Association. Alzheimer’s disease is often referred to as “Type 3 diabetes,” a brain-specific form of diabetes that is the result of the brain’s neurons lacking glucose, said John Didsbury, the CEO of T3D Therapeutics. Data from the longest-ever phase 3 trial of exercise on cognition released at the conference on Tuesday found that exercise may stall cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s patients. He said it’s only a matter of time before we see more research discoveries that show potential for slowing Alzheimer’s disease, possibly within the next year or two.
